Christmas is Full of Birds

Christmas is full of birds. Let me explain what I mean. When I think of Christmas I can hear one Christmas song in my head.

It’s getting closer to Christmas and I am reminded of the most favorite, well known Christmas song, “The Twelve days of Christmas.”

When I was a teacher, I would rehearse for the annual holiday play and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was always included. It’s a great song to teach reading, memorizations skills, math calculations, craft ideas, etc. You teachers reading this will understand what I’m talking about.

There are a lot of birds included and have read the secular meaning of the song, but will stick to the non-secular ideas in this post.

I used to teach remedial students this song because it was fun and they didn’t know they were actually learning something. Kids will resist if they think you’re trying to teach something.

To keep the kids occupied at home, have a little contest and give out some prizes to whoever gets the correct answers. You can make up math questions such as “what’s the TOTAL number of birds in the song?” “How many ladies are in this song?” “How many men are in this song?”

Get out catalogs or do internet searches for the prices of partridges, doves, drums, and the cost for people drumming for an hour or so.

Be creative and you can download pictures to color. You can survive the Christmas holiday when they are home from school with a little creativeness. Don’t forget that the 12 days of Christmas actually starts on Christmas Day and   runs to January 5th; well after they return to school. So read the song below and count the birds. You’ll find that Christmas is full of birds!

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Twelve drummers drumming,
Eleven pipers piping,
Ten lords a-leaping,
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree!
